Life at Home Base

Errands off the compound offer a chance to see other sides of the city

``Now we`re going to do...everybody listen. We're going to--Jonny! Take that toy out of your mouth! It was just in Sylvia's!" That's pretty much how substitute teaching preschool went today. The class at the Baby House consists of a really cute bunch of kids. When you're sitting down, they'll stand against a far wall, count to ten, and then charge at you to give you a big group hug. (And then bang heads. Oops.) When you start swinging one of them around in circles, a high pitched chorus of "Also me!" is sure to ensue. When you quiz them on their colours, you'll probably hear "yellow" called "banana" and "gray" called "dark white."

As I said, they're very cute. But when you lock yourself in a room with all of them and try to take charge of the situation, (and they can tell that you're not doing a very good job of it,) things get a little hectic. So that was this morning's challenge. The rest of the day went wonderfully, though! I can't believe it's already been a week since I left Canada. Things have fallen into a comfortable routine:

The upper balcony at the guesthouse is the best place to watch the sunrise.
At about 7AM, a choir starts practising in the valley below, turning the scene into
something suspiciously reminiscent of the opening of the Sound of Music.
It's really beautiful.

(Some variations apply--these are just the possible things to do on a given day.)

4:45 Get up
5:00 Go to the Bible School (These early morning trips feel like such adventures!)
6:15 Watch the sunrise
7:30 Breakfast
8:00-9:00 or 10:00: Go to class or make teaching supplies for the preschool
9:00 or 10:00-12:00 Baby House
12:30 or 1:00 Lunch at the Bible School, Guest House or Baby house
1:00-3:00 or 4:00 Freetime to rest, get organized or make teaching supplies while the babies sleep
4:00 Tea
4:15-6:00 Baby House (usually playing with the kids or helping with chores)
6:00 Supper
6:30 or 7:00 to 8:00 Downtime to blog and Skype home before bed

Timing is strange here when talking with folks in Canada. I'll Skype home in the morning, and my family will insist that I've talked to them that morning already, when in actuality I haven't talked to them since the previous afternoon. Time warps are fun.
